The Institute offers a 240-hour two-year training program leading to a certificate in family therapy. To receive the certificate, trainees must take the intensive family therapy training course (100 hours per year) for two years and 40 hours of other seminars and workshops to fulfill the 240 hours (see registration schedule for cost of other workshops). It is highly recommended that they participate in a Family of Origin Coaching course as part of the fulfillment of the course requirements. In this program the Institute faculty teach an expanded vision of systems theory, human development through the life cycle and the application of these ideas to clinical practice.

The faculty have become nationally known for their efforts to expand the boundaries of systems thinking to be more inclusive and attentive to issues of social justice and equity. The program reflects their attempts to re-vision the field of family therapy beyond theories that focus on the interior of the family to include issues of culture, class, race, and gender. Trainees will learn about applying systems theory to work with individuals, couples, families, extended families, and groups. Systems principles and clinical family therapy techniques for dealing with a multicultural population will be presented, including specific techniques such as the use of genograms and other tools of family and cultural assessment. The program will consider how to convene, engage and assess whole families, how to develop a workable treatment plan, family therapy with one person, and working with children and families using play therapy techniques. The program offers participants extensive exposure to the ideas of systems and their application in many clinical contexts with diverse populations at all phases of the life cycle. Live team case consultations will be a major focus of this program.

Topics include systemic hypothesizing, triangles, cutoffs and fusion, myths, secrets, and mastering resistance; genograms, major systems models; gender, class, and culture; serious psychological disturbance; addictions; violence and sexual abuse; loss; assessing and working with children and adolescents; marriage, divorce and remarriage; the elderly and their families .

To apply for this program, prospective trainees must send an application, resume and call Clinical Director Nydia Garcia Preto for an appointment (732-565-9010, ext. 210).
