The Institute offers a 240-hour, two-year training program leading to a certificate in family therapy. The Family Therapy Certificate Training Program requires 200 foundation hours of intensive family therapy training (100 hours per year for two years) and 40 elective seminar and workshop hours (20 hours per year at additional cost). Trainees are strongly urged to take the Family of Origin Coaching course as partial fulfillment of the course requirements.

The Family Therapy Certificate Training Program reflects the Institute’s re-visioning of family therapy to include issues of culture, class, race, gender and sexual orientation. In this program Institute faculty present an expanded conception of systems theory, human development through the life cycle, and the application of these ideas to clinical practice. Trainees learn systems principles and clinical family therapy techniques for working with individuals, couples, and families. Participants will learn to use genograms and family play genograms, how to assess whole families, how to develop a workable treatment plan, how to conduct family therapy with one person and how to work with children and families using play therapy techniques. Live team case consultations will be a major focus of this program.

Summer MFI Coaching Seminar on the Therapist’s Own Family

This small group coaching seminar will use the method of coaching developed by Murray Bowen to help participants explore relationships in their own families of origin, applying systems theory to family relationships. Participants will use genograms to track family patterns and decide what patterns they may want to change. Coaching, a method of changing one’s position in one’s family system, has been compared to Zen. Its methods are educational and cognitive, but the process relates to the existential goal of developing person-to-person relationships with members of one’s family, while maintaining a solid sense of values and goals. Topics include: traumatic loss, siblings, conflict, cutoffs, addiction, suicide, abuse and migration.

Supervision of Family Therapy Supervision

Supervision will be provided for Marriage and Family Therapists, Clinical Social Workers and other mental health professionals who are supervising clinicians who are working with families in their agencies. A framework for supervision and guidance through the relevant supervision literature will be provided. An individualized supervision program will be arranged. Fees will depend on the number of participants being supervised at the same time.

Domestic violence can have a devastating impact not only on the victim but the entire family. The impact of abuse spans through the life-cycle and over multiple generations. This workshop will provide mental health professionals with a comprehensive understanding of domestic violence (including verbal and emotional abuse), its impact on the family, and a variety of intervention strategies. We will examine not only the impact of domestic violence on the family but also the cultural and socioeconomic factors that influence assessment, disclosure and strategies for therapeutic interventions.
