Culture shapes our sense of who we are in the world as well as the relationships we form and those that are offered to us. This day will acquaint clinicians with South Asian cultural imperatives that affect South Asian individuals and families in obvious and subtle ways and cultural issues that are present in the therapeutic encounter. We will talk about effective ways of working with families from this culture to help them with a range of issues with which they may present.

Working with LGBTQ Individuals and Their Families

The workshop will provide an overview of coming out as a normative developmental process for individuals and their families. We will explore the ways in which LGBT families integrate and negotiate intersecting identities including sexual identity, gender identity, race, culture, and class. We will examine effective ways of collaborating with LGBT families to address problems, conflicts, and stressors generated by the ridig binary gender system and heteronormativity of the dominant culture in the USA.

Family Therapy Certificate Training Program

The Family Therapy Certificate Training Program requires 240 foundation hours of intensive family therapy supervision, training and special workshops. The program reflects the Institute's re-visioning of family therapy to include issues of culture, class, race, gender and sexual orientation., The Institute faculty presents an expanded conception of systems theory, human development through the life cycle, and the application of these ideas to clinical practice.
Trainees lean systems principles and family therapy techniques for working with individuals, couples, and families. Participants will learn how to use genograms and family play genograms, how to assess whole families, how to develop a workable treatment plan, conduct family therapy with one person, and to work with children and families using play therapy techniques. Live team case consultations are a major focus of this program.
