The genogram is not just a graphic illustration of a family’s cast of characters, but also the repository of an extraordinary amount of vital clinical information and if used well, an invaluable tool for guiding treatment. This presentation will focus on new developments in genograms and demonstrate the use of family play genograms to facilitate clients’ bridging cutoffs and overcoming family conflicts which interfere with their functioning and contribute to depression, addiction, anxiety, behavioral problems and underfunctioning. We will discuss innovative ways to use this tool in therapy, cultural, racial, and spiritual legacies and family play genograms, increasing clinicians’ ability to use genograms creatively with clients to tap into their cultural and familial resources.

Prevention and Treatment Strategies for Working with Troubled Adolescents

with Kenneth V. Hardy, Ph.D.

Thursday & Friday, November 1-2, 2007

Cost:
$200

Training:
12 hours

Location:
Neumann CenterDirections

Dates:
Thursday & Friday, November 1-2, 2007

Faculty:
Kenneth V. Hardy, Ph.D.

Adolescence is one of the most complex phases of human development. Under the best of circumstances, puberty, the elevated sense of significance assigned to peers, self-centeredness, and a generalized spirit of experimentation, exploration, and “testing of limits” make working with adolescents a challenging endeavor. This work is further complicated when the “normal developmental struggles” of adolescence are compounded by a myriad of emotional, behavioral, and familial difficulties. Working effectively with adolescents is challenging for many human service providers, especially when faced with youth who are involved with drugs/alcohol, violence, and other destructive behaviors. A framework for understanding adolescents who are prone toward angry, aggressive, and explosive behaviors will be presented. Specific strategies for enhancing effective assessment, engagement, and treatment with troubled adolescents will be provided.

Myths and realities of the immigration experience will be the focus of this workshop The effects of cultural discontinuities across the generations for immigrant families generally go unacknowledged in our society, until there is a crisis as they negotiate life cycle changes in the new context. The losses families experience, and changes they have to make to adapt in the new culture create major shifts in family relationships, and have a dramatic impact on family structure. This workshop will present a life cycle framework for appreciating the multigenerational traumatic impact of immigration on families going through this life cycle process. Video illustrations and case examples will be used to illustrate intergenerational conflicts, gender issues, and identity.
