We will use the Freud family to illustrate the use of genograms to track family process through the life cycle. Freud’s genogram can help us to see him in context and put in perspective the history he did not want us to tell. Like Freud, many people would prefer to downplay family history. Clinically it may be very useful for clients to do the genograms for their parents through their life cycle in order to understand their family legacies.
